How to Buy Carbon Credits in Kenya

Buying Kenyan carbon credits — from Nairobi or from abroad — passes through the same five gates. Most first purchases close within four to twelve weeks.

Last updated: November 2026. Figures and regulatory details reflect publicly reported information as of that date; verify current rules with the relevant registry or regulator before transacting.

Gate 1: what are you claiming, and how much?

Fix your annual tonnage and your public statement before contacting anyone. Kenyan supply splits into reduction credits (cookstoves, forest protection) and removals (soil carbon, mangroves) — the split matters for net-zero claims.

Gate 2: can the project prove its registry record?

Look the project up yourself on Verra (VCS), Gold Standard or Plan Vivo — and, since February 2026, increasingly in Kenya's national carbon registry. Pull the issuance history and check for past registry actions: the Northern Kenya Rangelands Carbon Project, for instance, was suspended and reinstated in June 2026 after an independent review, exactly the kind of history a registry search surfaces.

Gate 3: which channel fits your ticket size?

Large, repeat buyers usually go direct to the developer. Mid-size buyers get more curation from a portfolio manager such as Climate Impact Partners. Smaller or first-time tickets suit Africa-focused marketplaces such as Hummingbirds.

Gate 4: does the deal clear the 2026 rule book?

Require written evidence of the project's Kenyan approval and — for exports — that the volume fits under the national export cap, reported at around 10 million tonnes CO₂e a year. Details in our regulation guide.

Gate 5: paper the deal, retire, disclose

The ERPA should name price, volume and vintage; the retirement must be in your name, with serial numbers you can quote in your sustainability report. Kenyan companies waiting for the domestic exchange (planned for early 2027) should insist on registry retirements in the meantime.
